This extraordinary Georgian watch fob features a 1824 commemorative intaglio of the Revolutionary War hero Lafayette. The intaglio seal is set in a sawtooth bezel at the base of the elaborate fob. This piece is made of Pinchbeck, an ingenious alloy invented in the 18th century to imitate high carat gold. The intaglio seal is black Tassie glass. Tassie is the common name for a pressed glass intaglio. Tassie glass jewels were popular souvenirs in the 18th and early 19th century. The fob's lovely design, dramatic black and gold ingredients and historical significance make it a wonderful choice for a pendant.
Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, known in the United States simply as Lafayette, was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War. He was also a key figure in the French Revolutionary. Lafayette was born in 1757 and died in 1837. He would have been living at the time this fob was made.
We love fobs and always try to have a nice selection. They make wonderful pendants and layering pieces.
